Sweet Nate’s Cafe isn’t just a name—it’s a story.
Co-owner John Jacob and his business partner, Todd Matthews, have been best friends since junior high school. They grew up on the same block—John at one end, their friends Dave and Craig at the other, and Todd right in the middle.
At the center of it all was Todd’s dad, Nate.
As kids, John and Todd would occasionally give Todd’s sisters a hard time. Nate would step in, shake his head, and tell them to “knock it off.” To tease him, they started calling him “Sweet Nate”—a nickname he didn’t love at first.
But over time, it stuck.
What began as playful needling turned into something more meaningful. “Sweet Nate” became a name people said with affection—because that’s exactly who he was.
Today, that name lives on through the cafe.

Todd and John’s friendship spans decades. They’ve grown up together, built lives alongside each other, and even stood as best men in each other’s weddings.
Eventually, they decided to build something else together—a business rooted in the same values that shaped their friendship: loyalty, consistency, and showing up for people.
Sweet Nate’s started in 2021 as a small coffee trailer serving coffee and donuts.
What began as a simple setup quickly grew.
In 2023, they introduced breakfast wraps. As momentum built, they upgraded to a larger trailer and expanded into bagel breakfast sandwiches—bringing more variety and quality to their menu.
With each step, the goal stayed the same: serve great food and coffee, and treat people well.
In 2024, John and Todd saw an opportunity to take the next step.
When the former Onyx Cafe space became available inside the Oliver House, they reached out with a vision—to create a permanent space where people could gather, connect, and feel at home.
That vision became reality on December 4, 2024, when Sweet Nate’s Cafe officially opened its doors.
Sweet Nate’s Cafe is designed to feel like a neighborhood spot—comfortable, welcoming, and real.
From espresso drinks and cold brew to breakfast sandwiches and simple, well-made food, everything is built around quality and consistency. But more importantly, it’s about how people feel when they walk in.
A good cafe serves coffee.
A great cafe builds relationships.
That’s what Sweet Nate’s is here to do.
Naming the cafe after “Sweet Nate” is more than a tribute—it’s a standard.
It’s a reminder to treat people with kindness, to look out for others, and to create a place where everyone feels welcome.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to serve coffee.
It’s to carry that spirit forward—every single day.
Located in downtown Toledo, Sweet Nate’s Cafe is proud to be part of the community it grew up in.
